Forgot to mention: Joan & Colleen took our finished orphan quits to Kathy Hospice. The ladies there were tickled pink to see all of the WONDERFUL things that we were able to make out of the guild orphan blocks. If you had anything to do with this endeavor...pat yourself on the back and smile- because you certainly will be bringing smiles to the people at Kathy Hospice.

They certainly need a little something to smile about! Keep these souls in your prayers this Christmas.

TWO FRIENDS LEAVE FOR FLORIDAL

POSSIBLE WORKSHOPS:

We have cash, and we know how to spend it!! Norma is willing to do the legwork to find speakers and workshops for our guild members!

COMMITTEES:

We are still looking for a few people to fill in spots on our committees. Louanne is bringing new ideas as the new chairperson; we are also looking for an assistant and a new person to do the newsletter. None of the jobs are difficult, and none take more than 1-2 hours of your time during the month! Some take MUCH less. Give it a try, pad your resume, and volunteer!

SILENT AUCTION/SPRING CLEANING: Start cleaning up your sewing area; bagging up all of the things that you don’t want to see! 3 bag MAX.

QUILT SHOW ATTENDANCE: Attendance was down a little bit this year, but we were able to host a great show.
WORKERS FOR QUILT SHOWS:
It has been discussed that we “hire” local high school students for a “fee” to be put towards their fundraising efforts for their clubs.

Amazing how time flies....and myapologies for the lateness of the newsletter. I guess that I reallyam ready to give this task up to anyone who is willing. It’s nothard, and if you want to know what’s going on in the guild- this isthe job to have.

Is my face red…the newsletter isalmost late…well, according to my standards it IS late. Myapologies.

QUILT SHOW:

Louanne picked a fantasticrepresentative for our 2011 quilt show. Linda Halpin had great piecesand ideas, as well as lovely sampler quilts for our theme this year.

The show was full of wonderful quilts,many following the theme of sampler quilts. Kudos to our members whofinished their BOM sampler projects!

We couldn’t have put on such a greatshow without all the help from members and their families andfriends. Thank you EVERYONE!!

THANK YOU FROM OUR QUILT CHAIRPERSON:

Louanne was thrilled with the effortsthat everyone showed to make the 20th quilt show a rousing success.She felt that this year’s work ethic was great, and we’ll bedeciding soon if we will continue with an annual show or gobi-annually.

COMMITTEES:

Take a few minutes to volunteer forsome of the committees that Ties That Bind members feel are veryimportant. Your leadership may be just what we need!

ORPHANAGE PROJECT:

Did anyone realize just how many quiltswe have to donate? With orphan blocks from our members? There aremore blocks out there…we have done a fine job!!

BORDERSII WORKSHOP:

FifteenTTB quilters enjoyed a rainy Saturday at the Germantown library withJan Krueger’s Borders II work-shop. We played with fabric to create12 different border techniques- some that we’ve tried before, andothers we used in totally different and unique ways. It was a lot offun!! Workshop participants should bring their work to show andtell in October!

GOTTHREAD?:

Anyquilter with excess thread (all of us) can donate those extra spoolsto our Tanzanian connection, Sue Werner. Sue and her friends will beteaching African women to sew; our surplus will be going to afantastic cause. This may be the start of a great business for thesewomen.

BACK TO THE BANK:
After traveling to various locations the last 2 meetings, we will be meeting at the 1st National Bank in Slinger again as usual. Louanne will be our moderator.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

MILWAUKEE MACHINE QUILTING SHOW:
Volunteers are still needed to help as Door Checker and White Glovers. Volunteers are integral to any successful show, and the Milwaukee Machine Quilting Show is no exception. Volunteers will receive one free admission to the Quilt Show and Vendor Mall after they work a minimum of four (4) hours and names will go into a daily drawing for a $10 gift certificate to shop at the vendor mall. To help complete the sign-up form on the MQToday web site or email us at volco@MQToday.com and let us know when you can help. Thank you in advance for your support.

OUR TANAZANIAN CONNECTION:
Sue Werner has just learned that she could be eligible for a $400 grant for her Hearts in Unity organization if she provides 20 volunteers for a single 4 hour shift on Saturday August 6th from 2-6 pm. (Possible increase in funds if she can provide 30!) The work is sorting children’s clothing and other items at the Washington County Fair Park in West Bend. With these funds she can serve a meal to over 1000 children, purchase 80 textbooks, or purchase 4 goats for their livestock project. Contact Sue at hearts_in_unity@yahoo.com.

QUILT SHOW:
Exhibitor forms are on the website as of today. All of the mailings are ready to go. Quilt shop letters went out mid July, and guild letters are out as well. 16 of 24 vendor sites are taken, and shop mailings encourage shop owners to vend at the show. We will do the postcard mailings at the August meeting.

OCTOBER MEETING:
Member Audrey will present a binding workshop in Oct.

TRUNK SHOW & WORKSHOP:
Mark your calendar for the September 21st meeting when Jan and Linda will be bringing a trunk show to share; the following Saturday (Sept 24th) we’ll be meeting at the Germantown Community Library public room to sew Jan’s Border Workshop. Yipee!!

Eunice was the winner of 15 child-themed 10” blocks with pink or blue backgrounds. For August, the 12.5” block should be made with colors and patterns that are your idea of “School”.

We had a few members attend the WCF to judge the 4-H events and find a few new quilters for our guild!!

As we are major contributors, we will be scheduling a trunk show at the Museum with Sylvia as our host- getting a look at some of the wonderful quilts the museum has in its collection. Grand opening August 11-12, 2011. Marikay Waldvogel retreat Sept 16-18, and Linzi Upton and her Quilt Yurt are in the workin in October. David Taylor presents his workshop Aug. 19. Ann W has been at one of his workshops and says he’s a hoot.

TTB CHRISTMAS PARTY:
Tentatively we will be going to Big Cedar Lake on Wednesday, December 14th for the annual Christmas Party & brown bag exchange.

QUILTS FOR KATHY HOSPICE & CHARITY:
The orphan blocks that everyone has been busy donating and sewing into charity quilts are looking lovely- it is a great service that we are doing for our community.

A.One 2” strip of black, cut into 3.5” rectangles
   Two 2” strips of black, cut into 2” squares
   Three different brights, cut four 2” x 3.5” rectangles
   from each color
B. One strip 4”x10” any color
C. Eighteen 1.25” squares black solid
   Eighteen 2” squares mixed backgrounds
   Three 2” squares dark brights
D. Choose one light, one medium, one dark fabric
   Cut two 1.5” strips medium- approx. 22” in length

How are your entries coming along?? Some of the winners of the recent block of the month blocks are knocking out quilts like crazy!! It has really been exciting to see finished quilts at show and tell the last few months. Ladies, your talents are AMAZING!!

BROWN BAG EXCHANGE:

Even after a special email reminder, some of you forgot to bring your fat-quarter for the brown bag exchange. There will be no more waffling- especially as we will be at Royce’s on the 15^th. If you forget to bring your fabric this month, you’ll have to BUY the stuff at Royce’s.

Start rifling through those magazines and books to find the perfect pattern/idea for your Christmas exchange!

PRESENTATIONS & WORKSHOPS:

Restitching Tradition- Jan Krueger and Linda Marcou are going to host their program on Wednesday, Sept. 21^st at our normal meeting time.

Their workshop- Borders Too- will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24 (location as yet to be determined). If you’ve ever wondered what makes a quilt stand out – you’ll be interested in seeing how a border can become an integral part of your quilt for just a little more work.

The lap/wheelchair quilts should be at least 36 x 40 The Kathy Hospice is grateful for any quilts, just so they can be washed. They do not care if the batting is cotton, polyester or a blend. Make sure to label your quilts Ties That Bind 2011.

We are also considering getting together a “donated quilts display” for the quilt show…so start stitching!

BROWN BAG EXCHANGE:

Bring a favorite fat quarter for the brown bag exchange- our yearly challenge to be finished for the Christmas meeting. Go dig out that fat quarter…. RIGHT NOW, put it in a brown paper bag (with your name on a piece of paper on the inside of the bag) and tuck it into your TTB meeting items so you will be ready to go for the May meeting.

MAY MEETING WINDOWPANES VEST WORKSHOP:

Instructions are included in this newsletter. Our time with our friend Eunice is quickly coming to an end, as she and her husband Jim will soon be relocating to Florida. Do as much as you can before you come, bring your sewing machines to get started! (If you aren’t planning to work on the vest, bring a project to work on)

2011 ANNUAL QUILT SHOW:

The Quilted Basket will again serve as a drop off site for our show, we are checking to make sure that Royce’s’ Fabrics in West Bend will do the same.

The Slinger Middle School will be the site of the 2011 show again.

WORKSHOPS:

Norma is working on lining up workshops for the guild members. We had a great time last year when we got together at the Germantown Library to work on “Chickens”…an eco-friendly quilter’s way to use 100% cotton shirts. Names of presenters we are considering include Deb Kinder (art quilts, sweatshirts), Linda Marcou, Pat Schneider (paper piecing), wrapped cording baskets, etc, etc.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS w/ ORPHANS:

Colleen and Joan L. got together and with guild orphan blocks put together a number of lap, twin, and wheelchair quilt tops that need stitching into the final projects. Anyone can stitch the tops together, or create their own using blocks donated by guild members. We will donate the finished items to the Kathy Hospice, and other deserving organizations. Come help!! Mary M. will buy a roll of Warm and Natural batting with guild funds for these quilts.

ALZHEIMERS CHALLENGE:

Is anyone interested in doing a 9 x 12 challenge for the Alzheimer’s’ project? All of the quilts are auctioned off, and the proceeds are donated to research. Many of us are aware of the effects that this insidious disease has on our family members. www.alzquilts.org

Joan D. was the winner of the black with brights blocks. The block for May is to be a 12.5 inch block done in your choice of pattern – in red, white, and black materials.

Materials Needed for the Windowpanes Vest:

1.Cotton shirt at least one size too big (solid color)

Cut off the sleeves and the collar- including collar stand.

2.One fat quarter that works with color of the shirt

3.1/2 yd contrasting fabric for bias cut binding

4. Thread color to match shirt

Variegated fabric to contrast shirt color

Thread to match binding

5. 2- 5/8 to 7/8 inch buttons

6.Water soluble fabric marker

7.Fabric basting glue, or water soluble double sided adhesive tape (optional)

8. Pins

9. Rotary cutter, cutting mat, 24” ruler, & 6.5” square

You will need to cut from your “main” fat quarter fabric and scraps….

72 3.5” x 4.5” rectangles

72 2.5” x 3.5” rectangles

72 1.5” x 2.5” rectangles

Windowpanes Vest Instructions: (cont)

1.There should be no buttons/ pockets on the shirt. If there is a pleat in the back, sew down like a dart.

2. Cut of shirt tails at YOUR desired length, but add 2 inches before you do that…or wait until sewing on the rectangles before deciding the final length.

3. Stay stitch arm holes and neckline

4. Draw vertical lines on the right side of the shirt (do the back first) and space the lines at 4 inch intervals. Center the first line at the center back.

5. Draw horizontal line at 5 inch intervals. Start at the shoulder seams and go down.

From the bias fabric, cut strips 2.5 inches wide, to measure at least 5 yards.

To attach rectangles to the shirt, sew from side to side, and top to bottom.

Our featured quilter, Linda Halprin has formally signed a contract with us for the November 2011 quilt show. Louanne has quarter sheets available for anyone who wants them, and the vendor letters are going out. Patti will be contacting Royce’s and Colleen will talk to Quilted Basket to see if they will serve as drop off sites again for this falls’ show.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS:

Colleen and Joan L got together last month and put together orphan blocks to make quilts for Kathy Hospice & Memorial Quilts. Kathy Hospice needs twin size quilts and wheelchair blankets. At the April meeting, they will be looking for volunteers to put together the quilt “kits” that they’ve assembled. Donations of your orphan blocks or trial runs are always welcome for these projects.

QUILT SHOW EXHIBITS:

Just a gentle reminder to get crackin’ on your 2011 exhibits for the show. We need guild members to provide the bulk of the entries- that’s what makes our show so special!!

COUNTRY STORE:

While you’re at it, brainstorm for new and recycled ideas for the country store! We are always on the lookout for new and creative ways to add to our quilt show uniqueness!

The 2010 UFO challenge is history! Joan L. took home the prize for 1st and received a $10 gift certificate to Quilted Basket. Sylvia was 2nd and Nancy P. was 3rd. They each received fat quarters for their participation.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS:

The group discussed using our quilt show proceeds to continue donating to quilt related charities in the area. We will continue to sup-port McQuilters (Ronald McDonald House) and Memorial Quilters (formerly Freedom Quilters). The Quilt History Museum has a list that includes ideas for donations; we will be donating something up to $1000. A $500 gift card from Quilted Basket will be going to the McQuilters.

QUILTING ON TELEVISION:

Channel 36.1 airs a show M-F from 12-12:30 called Quilting Arts. Channel 36.3 (create) Georgia Boensteel is on at 5am, 11 am, 5 pm and 11 pm Sundays and Wednesdays.

Brad, the owner of Frank’s Sewing Center (it was his grandfather’s shop) was our featured speaker for February. We learned many interesting things after listening to him talk about maintenance and machine care! Thanks to Brad!!

QUILT SHOW:
Nationally known quilter Linda Halpin will be our featured quilter for the 2011 show. She lives in Boscobel WI, and will bring her extensive collection of quilts, as well as her latest book for signing.

QUILTS FOR KATHY HOSPICE:
The Kathy Hospice is in need of twin sized and laptop throws for the visitors at Kathy Hospice. We can do something wonderful for those who are in need in our immediate area. Bring your orphan blocks in next month so they can be put to use in making quilts for those who would truly appreciate them.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:
Colleen and Joan L. are willing to chair a committee to help address some of the social concerns that we can help with around the area. Anyone else interested in helping out, please let them know.

OTHER WORTHY CAUSES:
Crib/small laptop quilts for wheelchair users. The adult daycare at Trinity Lutheran Church is in need of laptop quilts.

POSSIBLE WORKSHOPS:
We have cash, and we know how to spend it!! If anyone is interested in having a speaker or workshop for our guild, speak up NOW!!!

MUSEUM OF QUILTS AND FIBER ARTS:

Our friends at the Museum have a “laundry list” of items that can be donated to help the cause. Tentatively, the remodeling of the barn is to be finished by June 1 (tentatively). We’ll have to take a road trip to check things out!

SPEAKER FOR FEBRUARY MEETING:

Brad, from Frank’s Sewing Center will be our featured speaker in February. He will help us keep our machines fired up for sewing.

BROWN BAG VEST WORKSHOP:

Eunice has graciously consented to show us how to make the vest she made out of Lola’s brown bag fat quarter. Tentatively scheduled for 5:30 pm before the April meeting. Eunice will give us a “supplies list”, but you will need a men’s shirt one size bigger than you normally wear as the base of the vest.

2011 SLINGER QUILT SHOW:

We are looking for a featured quilter for the 2011 show. Our theme this year will be Sampler Quilts- Sampler Celebration. So to inspire us, the first few months of Block of the Month challenge will be themes- same fabric, same size, your choice of patterns- so that the winner of the BOM will have a start on a Sampler Quilt!

BLOCK OF THE MONTH:

Lois wins her Summer Garden Blocks, and will decide the theme for the Sampler block in March. We expect that her quilt will be done next month (chuckle). Joan D. picked 30’s fabrics with white background- done in any 12.5” pattern for February.

BIRTHDAY BLOCKS: Only 7 women signed up for 2011 birthday blocks. It’s not too late to join this group!! Nancy provided patterns and red fabric for her Redwork snowman sampler quilt blocks. Since everyone will be doing a different “star” block in different colors, she hopes to have this “Sampler” quilt done for the show.

BROWN BAG EXCHANGE:

We shared our brown bag presents with the rest of the guild, and decided that this event is a KEEPER! Brown bag exchange (fat quarter of your choice in an unmarked brown paper bag) will go on as scheduled in May.

LOOKING FOR THE IDEAL PARTY PLACE: We are currently looking for the site of the 2011 Christmas Party. If you have any ideas, please share them at the next meetings. We do have a few months to make plans. We have several choices for dates- since the 3^rd Wednesday of the month falls Christmas week. We could have it December 14, or schedule a date in January.

SILENT AUCTION TIME;

Time to clear out the old…get your fabric, food, ferns…and anything else you’d like to auction away- ready for the meeting in September.

If you bring a box of misc., please make a list of what your box contains.

3 box MAX,: whatever doesn’t sell goes home with you.

QUILT SHOW INFO:

Most of the vendor spaces are full, and mailings are out. Postcards were labeled and stamped at the August meeting. Pat P. has volunteered to take on the challenge of Hospitality Coordinator. We are still looking for a nimble-fingered person to work publicity for the show. Aimee will handle the publicity.

QUILT SHOW EXHIBITS:

Put the finishing touches on the quilts you have in progress… so you can display them at the 2010 show this Novmber. Make a special point to get AT LEAST one quilt to the show. (Two would be nice, three would be teriffic, four would be FANTASTIC!)

We’ve always done a fine job as a guild with our quilts! The website is up and running, enter NOW!!

COUNTRY STORE:

Please take some time out of your busy schedules to make a few items for the country store. Bring ideas to guild meetings as well, so we can share the creative brainstorming of all of our members.

Break out your recipes for jams, jellies, pie fillings, fruit breads, dog and cat treats…you name it, we’ll sell it.

WISCONSIN MUSEUM OF QUILTS AND FIBER ARTS:

Had their groundbreaking on August 19.

MILWAUKEE MACHINE QUILTING SHOW:

GREAT show. We had several members attend.

Longarm classes, color and design. Getting ideas for “how to quilt this”. Many hobbyists, quilters who aren’t in it for profit.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH:

Sherry was the winner of the black and white triangle block. Pam brought in a block called “Party Hats” to be done for September with off-white background and two different colors in the block.

Two September birthdays, a sailboat block for Norma’s birthday, and don’t forget about the block you picked for Mary M’s September birthday as well.

WORKSHOP:

Sue Behrens is tentatively penciled in to show her folded border technique at the October meeting.

QUILT DOCUMENTATION DAY:

Several members of TTB were present for the Quilt Documentation Day at the Milwaukee Art Museum, 49 quilts were documented.

BROWN BAG EXCHANGE & PARTY:

Save the date…December 15 is the date for our Holiday Party at Fox & Hounds in Hubertus. We had a great time in ’09, and plan to do it again in ’10.

JANUARY SPEAKER:

We’re looking into inviting Brad from Frank’s Sewing Center in Waukesha. He was at the Milwaukee Machine Quilting show and was well received.

WQI:

Will be dissolving after this year. Next meeting is weekend of October 2/3 with 2 speakers. The cost is $40, with a Saturday meeting and Sunday classes. Door prizes, gifts, and surprises. The meeting will be held at the Four Points Sheraton in Brown Deer, just east of Hwy 57.

TIES THAT BIND

QUILT SHOW INFO:
Things are progressing nicely- 19 of 24 vendor spaces are full & mailings are going out. Pat P. has volunteered to take on the challenge of Hospitality Coordinator. We are still looking for a nimble-fingered person to work publicity for the show.

FABRIC RESCUE WORKSHOP:
We got all of our “chickens” in a row with Ann Marie Kremer on July 10 at the Germantown Library. Thirteen TTB members learned about using almost every part of a rescued men’s shirt and are considering a challenge project for next year.

VISITORS:
Pat P continues to add much to our guild- today it was two friends…Jean and Pat D. They are both rookie quilters and were welcomed warmly.

QUILT SHOW AT MAM:
10 members of TTB went to the Milwaukee Art Museum for the Quilt Show July 27. We enjoyed the exhibit, curators talk, and lunch with our quilting friends.

QUILT DOCUMENTATION DAY:
The MAM will sponsor WQHM’s documentation day on Saturday August 2. Volunteers are needed to help out in a variety of areas.

WQHM:
The Wisconsin Quilt History Museum is ready to begin groundbreaking in August- working to fix the barn’s foundation. The recent pledges have really made a difference! Thanks to area quilt guilds for making things happen. You may have already received an invitation for the August 19th Groundbreaking Ceremony. July 25 started a new exhibit- a selection from a collection of 300 mini quilts.

HINTERBURG SHOP HOP:
Thurs. Aug 12- Sat. Aug 15, join the Hinterburg shop hop from Oconomowoc to Sheboygan to Elm Grove and parts in between.

TIES THAT BIND

Meeting is Wednesday, July 21 @ 7:00 pm July 2010

FABRIC RESCUE CLASS:

Sat. July 10 from 9-3 at the Germantown Public Library- join the guild scrap-a-holics for this class. Bring: 24” ruler, largest cutting board you have, rotary cutter, scissors, seam ripper, tape measure, & shirts for rescue. Bring your beverage, and cash for lunch.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED:

We are still looking for that special woman who will be our hospitality hostess and publicity hound! Perhaps friends who split the work?? Please thoughtfully consider helping out in this position- it is not labor intensive except for the few days prior to the quilt show.

MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM FIELD TRIP:

Tentatively scheduled for Tuesday July 27. Cost $12, we’ll carpool. We will have 2 curators are doing the presentation, quilts are from the Winterthur Museum.

QUILT SHOW:

Mailing kits went out at the last meeting. Please make sure that the mailings go out on the preferred date. Printing is done, postage is paid for, the only expenses remaining now are food and insurance.
Postcard mailings will be done during the August meeting. Seven vendors are set, and viewer’s choice awards will be higher $$ this year.

COUNTRY STORE:

We are ALWAYS looking for items for the country store.

Get your donations in early…now is the time to come to the aid of your guild. Do a little, do a lot, it all helps!

SILENT AUCTION:
Get ready to get rid of some of your stuff! Silent auction returns again at our September meeting. 3 box minimum. Slash your stash, pitch your patches, bring your books…you get the idea.

CORRECTION:

The $200 donation went to the WI Memorial Quilt Project, not the Quilt History Museum. We are also sending an addn’l $300 to help out this group.

WQHM:
We accepted the challenge of North Shore Quilters and upped the ante, donating $2500 to be matched by an anonymous donor (on top of the $4000 that we have already given to the Museum). If you want to personally add to the total, send Mary M a check made out to TTB that will be added to our gift.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH: Colleen brought the block for June, a “Celestial Spires” block to be done in batiks. XXXXXX was the winner of the Jacob’s Ladder Blocks.

BIRTHDAY BLOCKS:

Mary M and Norma both have September birthdays. Mary has a pattern with various blocks- done with her cream background and your fabrics.

JULY 10th FABRIC RESCUE CLASS Come to the Germantown Public Library on Saturday July 10th from 9-3 for the Fabric Rescue class. Norma needs rsvp counts, and the workshop is free to guild members. Lunch provided.

MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM:A great display of wonderful old quilts and will be at the MAM until September. Time frame is 1760-1850, so all the quilts are hand made. August 7th is documentation day- Maggie Gordon will give a tour on this date.

FOLDED FABRIC WORKSHOP: Members came early on our regular guild meeting night to learn about unique folded fabric blocks with Sue Behrens. 3 new techniques were presented and we plan to have Sue back for folded fabric borders.

DOWNY QUILTS: We’ve already had 3 or 4 quilters send for and finish their cute “comfort” quilts from Downy. The kits provide all fabrics, you provide the batting and thread.

QUILT HISTORY MUSEUM:
They’re ready to raise the roof, and we want to help them reach their goal. Seven lucky TTB members were there in May when Mary Koval presented the museum with an extraordinary collection of quilts- including a Baltimore Album quilt that is stunning (and pricey)!

**Other WQHM news, the Quilt Index is almost ready to start training for entering information into the database. 7,000 quilts to enter at this time- this can be done at home on any computer (expected to take 3 years)

ITEMS FOR DOOR PRIZES:
Remember, one woman’s scrap is another’s treasure.
Anything you wish to donate can be used.

SILENT AUCTION:

It’s time to start saving those items for the September Silent Auction. Your ugly fabric or notions may be just what a TTB fellow quilter NEEDS for her next project. Consider giving up that quilt top that you just can’t finish- someone else would love to have the chance to make it something special. (3 box minimum)

2010 QUILT SHOW: We already have 8 vendor spaces full. We will be doubling prize money this year. All forms have been emailed to our website guru Randy! It’s not too early to enter your quilts!!??

COUNTRY STORE: Time to start thinking, sewing, and finishing your donations to the boutique. We’re always looking for unusual items to sell. We will be doing appliqué on cotton kitchen towels, and Sylvia plans to cut material for kits. Joan D. will use old wool sweaters to make mittens. What will YOU do???

DONATIONS: We donated another $200 to the Quilt History Museum, and $170 in fabric to the McQuilters along with a $30 check for supplies.

WQI NEXT MEETING: August 7/8 at American Family in Madison, and October 2/3 at the Four Points Sheraton in Brown Deer.

BROWN BAG EXCHANGE SUCCESSFUL:TTB ladies brought unmarked bags with fat quarters for the Christmas exchange. The fabric will be combined with stash fabric, a pattern, and that “special magic” that all quilters perform to make that unique gift for their brown bag buddies.

Get ready, get set, learn, & sew. May meeting workshop with Sue Behrens! Folded fabric workshop-3-D effects to try. The workshop starts at 5pm, come early and be ready to go by 5. Pieces have to be cut prior to the meeting. See attached workshop directions!!

FABRIC RESCUE WORKSHOP:
By now, everyone should have seen the dates for the Fabric Rescue workshop. Voting was done with a quick 4 day turn around.

WHERE ARE YOU??:
We are still looking for that special woman who will be our hospitality hostess and publicity hound! Perhaps friends who split the work?? Patti A. will keep track of area quilt shows and mail out our quarter sheet ads.

QUILT SHOW:
Royce Fabrics and Quilted Basket have again consented to providing a drop off center for quilt show entries. Other quilt show news: the post card mailings will be going out soon. The exhibitor list is growing… over 50 new exhibitors on our list! Forty-two vendor invites went out on May 1. The June meeting will need all hands on deck as we stamp and address the postcards which will go out in August.

HEARTS IN UNITY DONATION:
Sue Werner was presented with 100 book bags for the students in Tanzania. 1300 children now have book bags because of people who care! TTB Quilt Guild also gave Sue a check for $75 for the purchase of a goat.

SCRAPPY FRIENDSHIP QUILTS:
The deadline is open, the challenge has been issued, let’s see how your quilt will turn out…it’s not too late, you can even skip the fabric swap and use your own fabrics. You’ll need 6” squares…64 lights, and 64 darks/mediums. (see Joan L. for more info)

McCALL’S QUILTS FROM THE HEARTS:
If you want to try your hand at a scrappy or planned challenge, check with Sherry for the project she’s currently working on!

UFO SEW DATE:

Colleen was the lucky winner of 17 blocks from the April Challenge with 30’s fabrics. Pat P brought the pattern for May- “Jacob’s Ladder” to be done in springy or flowery fabrics and white on white.

We presented Joan L. with her Snail’s Trails in light and dark blues, and received patterns from Mary M. (a variety of blocks w/ a common cream back-ground) and Colleen (split 9 patch- scrappy).

Member Ann W. brought in her fabric collage quilts…impressive…and shared information about a workshop with quilter David Taylor.

Did you start on your UFO list? Or did you start a new project (NOT AGAIN)?? Work to whittle down your list of projects in progress…get them done, and off your quilt guilt list so you can start in on a NEW project that tickles your fancy.

Please consider accessing the site and ordering a packet to make a comfort quilt. The fabrics are fun and of high quality. You only need to supply the time to make it and the batting, the kit comes with everything else!! If we have enough interest, it might be possible for the guild to have a Downy Display at the Quilt show to garner even more support.

TTB has donated $200 to the Freedom Quilters, and material in the amount of $200 to the McQuilters from the Ronald McDonald House across from Children’s Hospital. Mary M. and Colleen are the lucky fabric shoppers. Another sizeable donation is possible for the Wisconsin Quilt History Museum.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH: Joan D. brought us a block to be done in 30’s fabrics and white on white. It finishes to 12.5. Block is “1930’s Square” found on Quilter’s Cache. Pat P. won the log cabin blocks and will provide the BOM for May!

BIRTHDAY BLOCKS:
Joan D has an April Birthday, she wants dark/light blues in the Snails Trails pattern. Finishes to 12.5”.

ACCUQUILT DEMO: Sylvia demonstrated and discussed pros and cons. It is GREAT for curved pieces and specialty cuts, like apple cores (ax blades) and hexagons, but a rotary cutter is still the best for keeping things on grain for strips and squares. Sylvia would be willing to cut scraps for sale at the Country Store.

SHARING THE WEALTH: Since we have been so blessed with the success of our November quilt shows, we have a large amount of money that we should donate to worthwhile causes such as McQuilters, the Freedom Quilters, etc. We are asking these groups what they are most in need of, can provide them with monetary support.

Check this out… www.quiltsforkids.org Downy Fabric Softener has a program that donates quilts to kids in hospitals or ill children. They will send the quilt pattern AND fabric to make a quilt…along with a note attached They do suggest that when you return the finished quilt, if possible, you add one that you’ve already made to go with! If anyone wants a fabric pack and pattern to make they can go into the website and they will mail it to them. Very nice fabric... Click on the volunteer site and go from there.

QUILT SHOW:

POSSIBLE WORKSHOPS:
We are looking into (and still talking about) getting Mary Ann Kelmer –rescuequilts for a workshop or trunk show.

**Folded fabric workshop. Class would cover ¾ different blocks, but you would have to have everything cut first. This could be a 1.5 hour class (before meeting?) Sue Behrens teaches- possibly in May.

SCHOOL BAGS FOR TANZANIA:
Wow, LaVerne went a long way to using up some of her stash…and we now have 50 bags for Sue Werner. Sue plans to attend the April meeting to get our picture for her kids. We will present the bags to her at that time.

SCRAPPY FRIENDSHIP QUILTS:
Several quilters are in the process of making the scrappy friendship quilts. Still interested? Bring your cut squares (8 x 8 piles of lights and 8x8 piles of dark/med).

CHALLENGE QUILT PATTERNS:
The next block is a small friendship square 6x6, you need 2 blocks. See Sherry L if you are interested.

Remember to save the pull tab part of your soda/pop cans for donation to the Ronald McDonald house!

NEW YEAR, RE-NEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP:
Since we are starting a new year, please get your $10 membership fee to Mary M. as soon as possible. If your contact information has changed (especially e-mail address), please get that information to Mary or Nancy!!

Think About It: A workshop with MaryAnn Kelmer (fabricrescue.com), her expertise is in "Rescue fabric"-- quilting from fabric obtained from items of clothing, especially men's 100% cotton shirts. She does a 1 1/2 hour presentation which costs $350 + mileage and hotel or she will do an all day class for $25 per student. (5-25 students) Machines are not needed for the class. She provides each student with one 100% cotton men's shirt and asks that students bring 2-3 shirts, a cutting mat, rotary cutter(6"x24").

Quilt Show: Slinger Middle School has been reserved. Printing is in progress, as there are a number of quilt shows starting in the area in March. Sylvia will perform her bed peels, and Ethel White is our featured quilter. One or two hardy souls are needed for “Hospitality Hostess” to replace Joanie.

Hearts in Unity: Helen started our donation with 12 book bags… How many bags can we finish before Sue heads to Africa in Nov?! We’re donating $75 from Quilt Show funds for this group to purchase a goat!

Challenge Projects:
**Joan has challenged group members to join her in a half-square triangle project.
1. Cut 64 6” squares of light material, and package in groups of 8.
2. Cut 64 6” dark/medium squares and package in groups of eight.

Patti A. is looking into contacting the teacher of the Folded Fabric Blocks for a workshop for TTB members.

Quilt Index.org:
Sylvia gave us an update from WQHM…they are joining the QI organization with Michigan State Univ. coordinating the work. They will be looking for people with computers to help input data- Sylvia will keep up informed. WQHM is hoping to break ground on the Barns in the fall of 2009, and are fundraising the final $200K for work. They currently have $1 million in funds.

Accuquilt:
Sylvia will be bringing her Accuquilt for a quick demo next month.

WQI:
Wisconsin Quilt has issued an invitation to all quilters to join them at their last two meetings. Aug. 6/7, 2010 in Madison @ American Family, and 4points Sheraton in Brown Deer Oct. 2010. There will be special door prizes & donations given to quilting organizations.

Visitors:
Pam J came with Eunice and Helen, and is joining the group. Ann Wilson has also joined the group- she was a visitor from an earlier meeting.

March 6-28, 2010 Southport Quilters present their Quilt Show "Colors of the Rainbow, the Kenosha Public Museum, Daimler Chrysler Room, 5500 1st Avenue, Kenosha, WI. On display will be a collection of members' quilts as well as their Challenge Quilt Exhibit. On March 20th there will be guild member demos, a children's project, and at 2 pm, Natalie Sewell will be the guest speaker. Admission is free, including Ms. Sewell's presentation; however the Museum will give visitors the opportunity to give a free will donation.

DECEMBER MEETING!

There was no December meeting, just 22 of us enjoying each others’ company at the Riverside Brewery in West Bend. We had a lovely dinner and then exchanged brown bag gifts. What wonderful quilting friends we have!! Lots of new bag ladies too! It was a wonderful way to start off the Christmas season.

THANK YOU TO OUTGOING PRESIDENT:

At the dinner on Dec. 20th, members presented our outgoing president with an autographed wallhanging as a token of our appreciation. THANK YOU!, Norma, for your fine leadership and willingness to volunteer. A well deserved round of applause to LaVerne and Caroline B. for the work they did coordinating everything for Norma’s gift.

JANUARY HOSTESSES:
We are in need of two more hostesses for the January meeting to join Nancy in bringing treats for guild members.
**If you have a particular month in mind, please let Nancy know so that you will get your first choice of months to act as hostess.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH:
Lola picked an 8 pointed star block in blues for the January BOM, as she won both the September and October blocks. Colleen is the November winner, and will provide the block for February.

BIRTHDAY BLOCKS:
We are starting out 2010 with eight members in this group. Anyone is welcome- just bring a copy of the block that you’d like for your birthday and sit back as your quilting friends cut your work in half.

UFO LISTS: Just keep sewing…as long as there are quilters, there will be unfinished objects, projects in progress, etc. We’ll know the winner of the UFO challenge soon!

WQHM: By now everyone should have received a letter from the Wisconsin Quilt History Museum outlining their need for funds to start phase one of the building project. How fortunate we are to be able to help through the guild, and to have this unique and exceptional organization in our “backyard”.

March 6-28, 2010 Southport Quilters present their Quilt Show "Colors of the Rainbow, the Kenosha Public Museum, Daimler Chrysler Room, 5500 1st Avenue, Kenosha, WI. On display will be a collection of members' quilts as well as their Challenge Quilt Exhibit. On March 20th there will be guild member demos, a children's project, and at 2 pm, Natalie Sewell will be the guest speaker. Admission is free, including Ms. Sewell's presentation; however the Museum will give visitors the opportunity to give a free will donation.

of your list. The quilting “F” word – is FINISHED!! Just don’t forget

WQHM: The Wisconsin Quilt History Museum officially has $1 million in
funds for the renovation of the main barn exhibit area. Our WQHM
member Syliva also gratefully accepted another large donation of funds
from TTB members as a result of the 2009 quilt show.

presents a rare display of samplers from their clothing and textile
collections. Come see intricate handiwork of early 19th century
American girls, sewing that reflects their times and the culture of
America in "The ABCs of Schoolgirl Samplers: Children, Education and
Needlework."

50 STATES QUILT:

The quilt was on display at the WQHM Antique and Quilt show that was held this past weekend in Cedarburg.

FREEDOM QUILTERS:

We are soooo close to meeting our 100 block commitment to Freedom Quilters. Consider joining these wonderful quilting ladies in West Bend the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6:30- 8:30.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:

Riverside Brewery is the location destination for this year’s celebration. Don’t forget your brown bag gift!!

McQUILTERS:

Dave Hecker from the Ronald McDonald house was our guest speaker at the October meeting. RMH operates 365 days a year, are located in 48 states, 46 foreign countries, and have 284 houses world wide. The Milwaukee house has 38 rooms, 25 which are for stays of 60 days or less. (This is considered a “normal” stay). There is always a waiting

list. Wisconsin has 3 houses, Milwaukee, Madison, & Marshfield. The pop tops have generated more than a million dollars for RMH since 2000. McQuilters are always looking for people…they meet the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month in the basement.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH (BOM): Patti’s choice for the Block of the Month for October is a 12 ½ inch block of T’s. Assorted blues for the “T” w/ white on white background. Lola is the winner of the Christmas Tree Skirt block, and will be bringing the pattern for the November block.

BIRTHDAY BLOCKS: Colleen is the Birthday girl this month, she’s chosen a scrappy Split 9-patch. Eunice and Lola each celebrate December birthdays.

FREEDOM QUILTERS:

We are nearing our 100 block total for donation to the freedom quilters. Find a few red, white, and blue scraps, a favorite pattern, and help us finish our pledge.

QUILT HISTORIAN IN BROOKFIELD:

Quilt historian, Becki Kranz, will use vintage and modern Amish quilts to illustrate how Amish heritage is reflected in the quilts the Amish design and create. Her program will be held at Brookfield Public Library, 1900 N. Calhoun Road, Brookfield, WI on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the library Community Room. GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT: Our show co-chairs Louanne and Joanie have indicated that this is their last year of leadership for the show. Mary M. and Joan D. respectfully decline the position and will continue to work their culinary magic in the kitchen.

How to Create in a Messy Quilt Space.

After quilting for 31 years I’ve finally come to the conclusion that I create best in a mess. That’s not to say I never clean up, but I’ve discovered that if I’m prudent about what the mess consists of, I can still create, still find things, and not get frustrated and walk away.
I’ve discovered that I don’t have to put everything away as I’m finished with it, just the tools I need over and over must get put away in the same place after each use, ready for me to have at hand in a moment.
**So here’s what I’ve devised to keep me creating, keep me calm, cool and collected and keep me at the project in hand, and loving it. Judie Bellingham Bellaonline quilting editor

For Scissors: use a little plastic and wire shelf used for creating another shelf in your pantry. They have holes of all sizes and are ideal for storing all my scissors. Even the little fine ones fit around the edges, both rotary cutters sit safely in their slot and even your big Fiskars sit in there.

Find a cutting ruler holder that works the same magic, whether you get something to hold magazines or have that handy hubby make something.
For pens/pencils/markers: find a suitable plastic lidded container (so you can see through it), that has several slots where you can segregate my markers, my pens, and my pencils and easily put them to hand when I need them.

Temporary fabric holder: purchase a rather snazzy looking laundry basket. When you’re finished with a particular fabric, don’t spend valuable creating time refolding and putting the fabric back into its rightful place, just fold the fabric up and place it into the basket. Then at the end of the project you can spend some time putting the fabric back where it belongs – neatly! The basket idea gets the fabric off the workspace, but still allows the “flow” of creation.

Maybe the act of consistently going through the fabric will help familiarize you with your stash, and you’ll know the gaps that need filling.

FREEDOM QUILTERS:

Let’s finish our 100 square challenge to this worth-while group. We have approximately 35 squares to complete to meet our 100 squares, $100 donation. Any red, white and blue block (12 ½”) -any pattern can be donated. Quilt with the FQ ladies in West Bend the 4th Wednesday from 6:30- 8:30.

Guild members got together for a work session before the July meeting and started working on new items…last years’ excess were donated to the Quilt Museum shop. Items needed…can be quilt related- pin cushions, fabricandy, charm squares, ornaments, clothespin bags, scarves, etc. etc. Jams, jellies, and home canned goods sell well.

BROWN BAG EXCHANGE:

The challenge is on- members exchanged brown paper bags containing a fat quarter. By the Dec. meeting, a completed project is due as a present.

Their choice of fabric, your choice of pattern!! FUN!

FREEDOM QUILTERS:

At the July meeting, we added another 35 squares to the 26 we’ve already donated. There are only 41 more to go to meet our 100 squares, $100 donation. Any red, white and blue block (12 ½”) -any pattern can be donated. Join these wonderful quilting ladies in West Bend the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6:30- 8:30. 61 TIPS TO REV UP YOUR QUILTING….finishing!!

41. Seen any cool tattoos lately?

42. Have you seen the creative labels they’re putting on wine these
days? Six pack beer carriers?

43. What’s your favorite color? Build a quilt around it.

44. Travel to another era and make something from that era. Be
Victorian and try crazy quilting or bead embellishing.

45. Break out that special fabric you’ve been hoarding and cut into
it. Make a PURSE??

46. If you have a favorite song, immortalize it in fabric.

47. Let a special collection inspire a quilt. Justify all those shoes
or Mammy salt and pepper shakers, etc.

48. Pick a book- design a quilt that could be its cover.

49. Is there a place you’d love to live or vacation? Turn it into a
quilt and you can visit anytime.

50. Plan a group challenge- let each quilter make up one of the rules.

51. Sign up for an online quilting or block challenge.

52. Limit your fabric choices to one fabric line or mfgr. It’ll force
you to be more creative and appreciative!

53. Give yourself a time limit: an hour, a day, a week.

54. Enter a show and have your quilts done before the entry deadline.

55. Learn something new, take a class.

56. Clean. YUP, clean. Clean your sewing room, your house, your car.
Physical labor = clearing the mind.

57. Do yardwork. Green stuff= quilting inspiration!

58. Use rubber stamps, Paintstiks, foils, fibers or other creative
stuff and play.

59. Start a creative journal. The act of choosing a journal and
beginning the process may give you the jumpstart you’ve been looking
for.

60. Update your design files. Don’t have any? Start some!!

61. Organize while you play with your fabric. At least when you’re

21. Look at pretty magazines. Don’t limit yourself to quilt magazines.

22. Do what artists do. Look at art books, read art magazines, go to art supply stores.

23. Look at catalogs. Try Pottery Barn for color schemes and the Artful Home just because it’s cool.

24. Pour yourself some hot chocolate and sit down with your design journal or graph paper.

25. Get out your quilt books and just start flipping through them. Ideas will JUMP off the pages.

26. Go to quilt guild meeting. Show & tell? Pay attention!

27. Visit a quilt show and actually look at the quilts.

28. Go to a quilt shop you’ve never visited or go to your local show and look in the corners that you usually skip.

29. Surf an online fabric shop and look at all the pretties!

30. On the web, check out websites and blogs posted by other quilters. Remember, you’re looking for inspiration…

31. Try something new! Have you tried quilted postcards? Artist trading cards? Placemats?

32. Try a completely new technique. Buy a book or take a class. Drag a friend along.

33. Make a quilt in a size or shape you’ve never tried before. Inchies (square inch) and square foot quilts have been quilting world hits recently.

34. Test drive a new style of quilting. Are you traditional? Do something artsy. Do you usually make art quilts? Try something with wool.

35. Change the way you work. If you usually use a pattern, try working without a net!! Experiment with some freeform rotary cutting.

36. What do you see from your house or car windows?

37. Look to buildings for inspiration. Esteria Austin and Kaffe Fassett both do it.

38. Go on a nature walk -check out the color & shapes.

39. Get inspired by the night sky. Wouldn’t it make a great qullt?

40. Look at your pet (or the critters in your yard) as potential portrait subjects.

Hello Ladies-
Are you still digging out or sewing up your own storm?? Many thanks to Colleen and Carolyn for taking care of the minutes and meeting while many of us were away. Sunny AZ for me... and yes, I did purchase fabric!

Has anyone entered the Mukwonago show this coming weekend? I entered two quilts, and I can drive them down on Friday, but will be away for the rest of the weekend and would like to know if anyone can pick up (otherwise I will make other arrangements with the crazy quilting ladies in Mukwonago).

FREEDOM QUILTS:

Many thanks to guest speaker Belle Wichlacz for her presentation about Freedom Quilters. Belle’s son Travis lost his life in Iraq in 2005.

Betty Nielson of IA made a quilt for Belle to honor Travis. The group began shortly afterwards- their motto is “Being There, Reaching Out”.

The group in West Bend meets, makes blocks, and quilts. Freedom Quilters meet on the 4th Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the Mutual Mall in West Bend. They also meet the same week on Saturday. All work is donations. Blocks can be dropped off at Royce’s Quilt Shop in West Bend or mail them to:

60 ways to Rev up your quilting: 1st installment

Climb out of that color rut! Whatever color you’re thinking about using, be wild and try the color on the opposite side of the color wheel. Seeing red, GO green! Thinking blue, TRY orange. Don’t be afraid J
Start with a color you’ve never used before.
Try your hand at a monochromatic quilt. Choose a color and stick with it, using different shades and values.
Get rid of color entirely. Pull out all of those gorgeous B&W fabrics you’ve been hoarding and get busy!!
Organize a fabric swap with your friends.
Dig out your UFO’s and just to keep it interesting, let someone else choose which UFO you’ll finish.
Tired of your own UFO’s? Make a trade and finish someone else’s.
Get friends together and make a quilt for charity.
Ever try a Round Robin?
Turn off your brain and let someone e3lse do the thinking; Buy a kit! (Better yet, finish the one you’ve already started)

The February meeting was attended by 11 hardy souls who braved the cold and snow to meet at the 1st National Bank. Many thanks to Colleen, Norma, and Gloria who made the marvelous treats.

FOUND...OUR MODERATOR:

Norma has graciously volunteered to chair our meetings this year- we are grateful for her leadership and appreciate her commitment.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY:

Start cleaning out your stash, weeding out your undesirables- bring them to meetings for door prizes, or stockpile them for the September Silent Auction. Your discards could be a treasure for someone else!

GET YOUR PHD IN UFO’S:

Get out those UFO projects, number them 1-10 (if you have that many-or call them 1A,B,C- if you have that MANY) and join Colleen and Nancy as they attempt to clean up all the pips (projects in progress) and get ‘er done! Who says we can’t be like the cable guy?? Packets with ideas for finishing up those pesky projects will be given to all who are interested!

How many quilts from TTB will be entered in the Crazy Quilter’s 22ndAnnual Quilt Show? Mary M is planning to take quilts down and pick up-let’s see just how many of our terrific quilts we can showcase at their show. Remember, when we donate to their show, they return the favor.

Accuracy Matters

12. Press as you go.

13. Be sure to cut accurate templates

14. Cut accurately when using the rotary cutter.

15. Do whatever is necessary to achieve accurate ¼” seams. You’ll have fewer headaches.

16. Learn to sew accurate strip sets.

17. Be sure to square up each block before stitching them together. Square up your quilt top before adding borders.

Hard to believe, but we have almost completed our contribution pledge to the Quilt Museum.

Ye Olde Schoolhouse Quilt Shop is the site on the 1^st, 3^rd, and 5^th Fridays, work starts at 10:00 am. Wisconsin Servicemen and women are shipping out again in the fall…finish those UFO projects and donate them to a child who will certainly cherish it!

Ties That Bind Quilters...

Hard to believe that August 1 is almost here! Just a reminder that the new meeting site is the conference room of the 1st National Bank, just south (left) of the former "Common Threads" Shop.

*Be sure to check out the newsletter- much important information is included this month. New and veteran members- it's time to start gearing up for this year's November 1st Quilt Show. It promises to be another great one, but only with the help of everyone!

MEETINGS:

We will be meeting in the bank’s conference room the remainder of 2008; we’ll re-examine in January of 2009. Charge to the guild is $25 per month.

Nineteen of 25 vendor spaces are already paid for! We have some interesting new vendors. Exhibitor forms are done and going to our computer expert for posting. Quilt shop mailings go out August 1.

Yes, it’s that time! Start your piles and bring up to 3 individual or “bagged” items to RECYCLE at the September Silent Auction. Clean out your sewing room, bring $$ and look for something new for you!

Audrey M provided the pattern “Cubed Lattice” done in Fall colors (greens, browns, oranges) for August. Ellie M won 12 eight-pointed star blocks this month and will bring her pattern for the September BOM in August.

BIRTHDAY BLOCKS

Mary M has a Sept. birthday and wants log cabin blocks- any size in blues and whites with a red center. Colleen (snails trails in pinks) & Jenifer (Freddy the Frog in greens) are the Oct. b-days. Eunice gets Frogs in greens in December.
